VATICAN CITY (CNN) -- Pope John Paul II will leave Rome's
Gemelli hospital Tuesday, a week after surgery to remove his
inflamed appendix, the Vatican said Monday. "He will return
to the Vatican, where he will spend a period of convalescence
and rest according to his doctors' orders," the Vatican said
in a statement. It added that the 76-year-old pope would
gradually resume his daily activities.
On Sunday, the New York Times quoted Vatican sources as
saying there may be an announcement soon that the pope has a
form of Parkinson's disease, which is caused by the
deterioration of nerve cells in the brain. Monday's Vatican
statement made no mention of the disease.
