Group accuses Mexico of requiring sterilizations

MEXICO CITY (CNN) -- Thousands of poor Indian women are being subjected to forced sterilization, a Catholic anti-abortion group said Friday, appealing to the Mexican government to cease the practice.

The head of the group Pro-Vida (Pro-Life) said members had documented more than 300 cases of forced sterilization in government medical facilities over the past three years. They claimed to know of "several thousand" other cases in which the women who had been forced to have the procedure done refused to come forward publicly.

A Health Ministry spokesman denied the claims, saying the government has no campaign of forced sterilization. Instead, it tries to give women information on contraception options so they can make an informed choice, the ministry said.

Reuters contributed to this report.
