Volcano erupts near Guatemalan capital
GUATEMALA CITY (CNN) -- Emergency workers in the Guatemalan
capital prepared for a possible evacuation Friday after a
volcano south of the city erupted at midnight, setting off
two hours of successive explosions, authorities said.
Fascinated Guatemala City residents were able to see the
fiery explosions and molten lava flowing from the Pacaya
Volcano's crater early Friday morning. The eruption caused
no casualties, and its lava flow endangered no cities,
officials said.
Pacaya is one of several active volcanoes in the country.
According to the National Seismological Institute, this was
its largest eruption since 1987.
