Volcano melting Icelandic glacier

REYKJAVIK, Iceland (CNN) -- Iceland was on full alert Sunday as a newly active volcano threatened to cause major flooding along the southern coast of the island nation.

The Loki volcano roared to life earlier this week beneath Europe's largest glacier, 120 miles (192 kilometers) east of Reykjavik, sending a cloud of steam and ash 6.2 miles (10 kilometers) into the air.

Icelanders were reinforcing barriers along river banks, in case the eruption burst the ice cap and launches widespread flooding. They also dug channels through roads to give the expected torrent of water a clear path.



Bus crash kills 38 in South Africa

WARMBATHS, South Africa (CNN) -- A fiery bus crash Saturday killed at least 38 people north of Pretoria. Police said the bus collided with a gasoline tanker.

Witnesses said the bus driver, carrying mourners back from a funeral, was trying to overtake another vehicle while driving in thick smoke from a wildfire. At least 12 people were in critical condition at area hospitals.



S. Korean city plans tourist sex town

SEOUL, South Korea (CNN) -- Officials in Taegu, South Korea, 140 miles south of Seoul, are planning to convert the city's red-light district into a "sex town" exempt from a pornography clampdown.

Feminists oppose the plan, reported the Seoul newspaper Dong-A Ilbo. The paper quoted a Taegu official saying the sex town was part of the city's five-year scheme to boost tourism.



Appeals hearings to begin for former S. Korean presidents

SEOUL, South Korea (CNN) -- South Korea's High Court will begin hearing appeals Monday from attorneys for two former presidents convicted on charges mutiny, treason and taking bribes.

Chun Doo Hwan was sentenced to death and Roh Tae-woo to 22 1/2 years in prison for their parts in a 1979 coup and a 1980 massacre of civilians, as well as fir taking millions of dollars in bribes. The pair want their convictions reversed, while prosecutors will argue to increase Roh's sentence.

Fourteen former aides to the two former generals will also fight attempts by prosecutors to increase their sentences.



Thousands mark anniversary of student massacre

BANGKOK, Thailand (CNN) -- Thousands came to Thaammasat University Sunday to mark the 20th anniversary of the massacre of students on the university soccer field.

Soldiers, police and right-wing extremists attacked the students, squelching a student-led democracy movement and reinstating a military government.

Forty-six students were official listed as killed in the massacre, but nearly 300 are still missing. No Thai government has fully investigated the incident.



Chinese activists sail toward disputed islands

KEELUNG, Taiwan (CNN) -- About 140 Chinese activists set sail Sunday evening for a chain of disputed islands in the East China Sea. The 140 activists, from Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan, were accompanied by 160 Chinese journalist on their journey to the Diaoyu Islands, called Senkakus and also claimed by the Japanese.

The protesters say they plan to land on the islands and tear down a small lighthouse built in July by a Japanese nationalist group. China says its claim to the islands goes back to the 17th century; Japan's stake goes back to 1895, with an interval between the end of World War II and 1972 when the United States administered the uninhabited islands.
