Italian police bust child smuggling ring
ROME (CNN) -- Italian police have arrested eight people
suspected of secretly importing and selling Somali children.
State-owned RAI television said seven Somalis and one Italian
were accused of selling the children, ages 6 to 12, for
prices ranging from $18,000 to $30,000 each.
They were bought in Somali villages and smuggled to Italy in
car trunks. The ring reportedly marketed the children through
catalogues filled with photographs.
The news agency ANSA quoted an unnamed investigator as saying
the "most optimistic hypothesis is that they were sold
clandestinely for adoption. But that is being checked."
