Chechen cease-fire holds
GROZNY, Russia (CNN) -- Russian soldiers and Chechen
rebels mingled peaceably in the Chechen capital
Thursday as Russian security chief Alexander Lebed
tried to gain support from Moscow for his peace
initiative with the separatists.
Both sides patrolled the streets of Grozny to deter
looters as Russian troops continued to leave the city
under a peace agreement forged earlier this week. More
than 8,000 Russians have left Chechnya, Interfax news
agency said.
Lebed planned to return to Chechnya Friday for another
round of talks.

Mafia turncoat arrested in contract killing
ROME (CNN) -- A Sicilian Mafia informant was arrested
Thursday for allegedly ordering the shooting deaths of
a young widow and a 14-year-old boy while under a
protection program, state television reported.
Giuseppe Ferone, 41, was detained along with four
others at a Mafia safe house in Azio. The shootings
occurred Tuesday in a cemetery in the Sicilian city of
Catania. Police found 20 rifles, explosives and fake
police uniforms at the house.
Ferone is a Catania boss who has been cooperating with
investigators since 1994. The killings fueled an
angry debate in Italy over whether former Mafia
killers can be trusted and should benefit from a
generous protection program.
The widow was shot while praying by the tomb of her
husband, who died last year in a Mafia hit.
