SRINAGAR, India (CNN) -- Six Indian tourists were shot dead
by gunmen in the state of Jammu and Kashmir while six others
held overnight were released, police said Tuesday.
The victims, riddled with bullets, were discovered near Dal
Lake Tuesday morning There has been no claim of
responsibility.
The Militant Coordination Group, made up of all of Jammu and
Kashmir's main militant factions, issued a statement last
week asking for a ban on excursions and picnicking in the
state.
The group's appeal said tourism did not go well with the
struggle to free the region from Indian rule. Jammu and
Kashmir is India's only Muslim-majority state.
