Scientists expect the eruption to continue over the next several days. There have been no reports of injuries or major damage, and lava has not poured out of the volcano.

Authorities urged residents to remain inside Tuesday, and many of the roads in the remote region have been closed. The eruption came six days after scientists judged that volcanic activity on Mount Ruapehu had subsided.

Aftershocks follow strong Indonesian quake

The quake struck just after sunset Monday in a remote area northwest of Kupang, about 1,100 miles (1,750 km) from Jakarta.
