TABA, Egypt (CNN) -- Israelis and Palestinians ended their inaugural talks Monday aimed at reaching a final peace settlement. While committing to a goal of peace, many issues remained unresolved.

Among these were questions of control over Jerusalem, the fate of hundreds of thousands of Palestinian refugees, the future of Jewish settlements in the West Bank and Gaza, and the shape and status of a Palestinian entity.

"The two sides reaffirmed their determination to put an end to decades of confrontation and to live in peaceful coexistence, mutual dignity and security," said a communique issued by the two sides after the talks in Egypt's Red Sea resort of Taba.

Earlier Monday, the Palestinian delegation accused the Israelis of leaking false information to the media, causing the second day of meetings to be delayed nearly three hours.

Reuters contributed to this report.
