Montserrat volcano's active streak not over yet

Volcano

OLVESTON, Montserrat (CNN) -- Montserrat residents, evacuated to the northern side of the Caribbean island Wednesday of last week, have not returned to their homes yet because of the continuing danger posed by the Soufriere Hills volcano.

It has been relatively inactive for 100 years, but has erupted several times since Saturday, spewing ashes and molten rock as high as 5 miles into the air above the mountain.

Geologists expect a much larger "climactic eruption" within the next several days. It could spread lethal doses of super-heated gas, rock, and ash over the evacuated area, which includes the island's capital of Plymouth, experts said. The roughly 5,000 evacuees are believed to be safe.

Britain recognizes a smaller Yugoslavia

UK / Yugoslavia

LONDON (CNN) -- Britain officially recognized the new, shrunken Yugoslavia Wednesday as the legitimate heir of the old diplomatic title, "Federal Republic of Yugoslavia." The move opens Yugoslavia up for renewed peacetime relations.

Britain's recognition of the nation -- now made up only of Serbia and Montenegro -- came only after Yugoslavia removed the final barrier to that recognition by acknowledging that its former republic of Macedonia was an independent nation.

Serbian President Slobodan Milosevic has said for some time that it was important for his country to be the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. With this recognition, his country can continue previous memberships in international bodies, rather than applying to join them all over again.
