MIAMI, Florida (CNN) -- The late-December Miami-to-Cali flight is typically filled with vacationers, business people and those returning to Colombia for the Christmas holiday. American Airlines Flight 965 departed Miami International Airport two hours behind schedule Wednesday night.
Now relatives of those on the flight are frantic, afraid their worst fears have come true.
They were waiting at Miami International Airport, obviously distraught, not knowing for sure what had happened. American Airlines set up a private suite at the airport where relatives were given updated information as the search began at dawn.
But two Colombian women were giving thanks Thursday morning. A winter storm in the Northeast United States delayed their New York-to-Miami flight, so the mother-daughter pair missed Flight 965. The two phoned home to report that the delay had saved their lives.
"(My father) thought we were dead," said the daughter. "He was crying, he was scared. ... He went to the airport and everything. He was scared."
An American spokesman said that the airline would not release the names of victims until families had been notified.
