Oklahoma City Tragedy

Desert dig for new evidence in Oklahoma bombing

July 12, 1995

KINGMAN, Arizona (CNN) -- FBI agents, U.S. Forest Rangers and Army personnel searched Wednesday for a duffel bag believed buried near Kingman that may contain more evidence linking Timothy McVeigh to the Oklahoma City bombing.

Law enforcement sources told CNN's Robert Vito the search was spurred by information obtained during the ongoing interrogation of Michael Fortier, a Kingman resident and longtime McVeigh friend, who is being questioned in Oklahoma City as a material witness and possible suspect in the case.

The sources say Fortier is seeking a plea bargain, trading his knowledge about elements of the plan to bomb the Oklahoma City federal building April 19 in exchange for leniency from prosecutors. This is his second prolonged stay in Oklahoma City, and sources say he might not return to Kingman this time.
