Oklahoma City Tragedy

McVeigh's sister to testify

August 2, 1995

From CNN Oklahoma City Bureau Chief Tony Clark

OKLAHOMA CITY, Oklahoma (CNN) -- Jennifer McVeigh flew into Oklahoma City shortly before noon Tuesday. The 21 year-old sister of bombing suspect Timothy McVeigh has been subpoenaed to testify before the federal grand jury on Wednesday. But her attorney, Joel Daniels, said he has to work out ground rules before Ms. McVeigh will testify. Said Daniels, "I've been informed she is not a target. The fact she has been subpoenaed is a clear signal to us that she is not considered a target in this investigation."(96K WAV sound)

Federal law enforcement sources do believe Jennifer McVeigh is one of her brother's closest confidantes and may have had advance knowledge of the bombing. An unsent letter, found in Timothy McVeigh's car after his arrest, mentioned plans for attacks on federal buildings in Oklahoma, Omaha and Phoenix, according to sources. That letter was addressed to "Jenny," presumably, Jennifer McVeigh.

And when authorities arrived to interview Jennifer McVeigh after the bombing, they found her burning papers in a barbecue grill. The contents of those papers are unknown.

Ms. McVeigh and her lawyer met for four hours with prosecutors, without any word on what decisions may have been reached.

Meanwhile in Kingman, Arizona, after a two-week FBI search in the desert for a buried duffel bag that may be linked to the bombing, a source said "We found what we were looking for", but would not say what that was.

The deadline for the grand jury to return an indictment is a week from Friday. McVeigh is being held at the federal prison in El Reno, Oklahoma. Jennifer McVeigh's lawyer said she may visit her brother while she is in Oklahoma.
