Israeli official meets Pollard in prison

ATLANTA, Georgia (CNN) -- An Israeli official in the U.S. confirms to CNN that an official from Israel's Atlanta consulate met Sunday with Jonathan Pollard, the former U.S. Navy intelligence analyst sentenced to life in prison for passing U.S. security information to Israel.

The meeting took place at a federal prison in North Carolina. Pollard's request for Israeli citizenship recently was approved, and this was the first visit from an Israeli official.

Pollard was arrested 11 years ago, in an incident that embarrassed by the Israeli government. In recent months, pressure has grown from Israelis and American Jews to reduce Pollard's sentence. But White House Chief of Staff Leon Panetta said Sunday that President Clinton has no plans to grant clemency to Pollard.
