SAN JOSE, California (Reuter) -- The long-awaited trial of the man accused of the kidnapping and murder of 12-year-old Polly Klaas was set to begin here Monday under tight security and heavy media attention.
Richard Davis, a parolee, pleaded innocent to charges he kidnapped and murdered Klaas, who was abducted at knifepoint from her home in Petaluma, 30 miles north of San Francisco, on October 1, 1993, during a slumber party while her mother slept nearby.
LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Audrey Meadows, who as Alice on the 1950s comedy "The Honeymooners" played one of television's strongest, most spirited wives, died of cancer, a spokeswoman said Sunday. She was 71.
Meadows died at 8:50 p.m. Saturday at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, according to Beverly Callison, an assistant to Meadows' manager Ray Katz.
Meadows starred with Jackie Gleason as lovebirds and sparring partners Ralph and Alice Kramden in "The Honeymooners." Meadows held her own against the bigger-than- life Gleason and his blustering bus driver character.
BALTIMORE, Maryland (AP) -- President Clinton missed his chance to put liberal judges on federal courts when Democrats dominated the Senate, a federal appeals court judge told an American Bar Association audience Sunday.
"In the first two years Clinton had a real opportunity, which he blew," said Judge Stephen Reinhardt of the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.
"The Republicans weren't afraid to have bloody battles" over confirmations when Presidents Reagan and Bush were in office, Reinhardt said. During those years, Senate Democrats "confirmed right-wing judge after right-wing judge."
OCALA, Florida (CNN) -- Attorney F. Lee Bailey was found in contempt of court Saturday and given until the end of the month to turn over about $24 million dollars in stock and cash he is holding from Claude Duboc, a former client and convicted drug dealer.
Bailey faces six months in jail if he doesn't comply. He claims the assets are his, as payment for representing Duboc.
The government said Bailey was to use stock proceeds to maintain and sell real estate owned by Duboc, and pay for Duboc's legal representation.
On Friday, Bailey testified he did not know what happened to $3 million worth of stock that he sold. Bailey said he never reported the $3 million on his income tax because he was advised by his lawyer and accountants that he didn't have to.
LOS ANGELES (CNN) -- There's a big party Tuesday to celebrate former President Ronald Reagan's 85th birthday. But, the guest of honor won't be there.
Reagan, who suffers from Alzheimer's disease, has made no public appearances in the 15 months since he disclosed his illness. Last Friday, CNN was able to take the picture you see here -- the first of Reagan since January 1, 1995.
House Speaker Newt Gingrich, retired General Colin Powell and 500 other friends and relatives will be on hand to celebrate at the upscale Los Angeles restaurant, Chasen's, where Reagan proposed to his wife, Nancy. Chasen's closed last April, but will open for the special event. The cost is $1,000 per plate, and proceeds will benefit the Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation.
VISTA, California (CNN) -- A teen-ager sought in the deaths of five family members was taken into custody early Sunday.
Shawn Jenkins, 15, was discovered at a gas station, said a San Diego County sheriff's spokesman.
The bodies of Jenkins' grandparents, parents and sister were found after a fire was set at a Vista condominium, but authorities believe the victims were stabbed to death before the fire was started.
The condo complex is about 40 miles northeast of San Diego. Authorities have not revealed a motive for the killings.
