LOUISVILLE, Kentucky (CNN) -- The apparent winner of last week's $89.3 Powerball lottery has contacted lottery officials in Kentucky, Kristin Karl of the Kentucky Lottery Corp. said Friday.
An attorney had called lottery officials to set up a meeting to verify his client has the winning ticket, said Karl. The name of the potential winner was not disclosed.
Lottery officials have said they believe the winning ticket was bought at Pal's Shop Ezy Market just north of the Tennessee line near Fort Campbell.
The $89.3 million jackpot is the third largest lottery prize won by one ticket, Kentucky lottery officials said. A Wisconsin man won $111.2 million in July 1993, and an Arizona golf pro won $108 million in March 1995.
The winning Powerball numbers drawn Wednesday night were 1, 24, 30, 36, 42 and the Powerball number was 7.
WASHINGTON (CNN) -- The Pentagon says the United States will wrap up its involvement in the U.N. military mission in Haiti on schedule February 29. A small number of American troops may return to help build roads and schools, officials said.
Pentagon spokesman Ken Bacon said the United States is hopeful that Canada will provide troops to help maintain stability in Haiti after the U.N. mission ends.
Canada's top military officer met with Joint Chiefs Chairman Gen. John Shalikashvili at the Pentagon Thursday.
American troops have been in Haiti since September 1994. The United States currently has 2,128 peacekeeping troops and 266 support personnel in Haiti.
Bacon said some support personnel will remain after February 29, but not for more than six weeks.
HOUSTON, Texas (CNN) -- The pregnant youth found Wednesday night after fleeing from state custody last Sunday is 14 years old and not 10, as Texas officials had believed when they began their search for her.
Adela Garcia, the real name of the girl authorities had known as Cindy Garcia, is eight-and-a-half-months pregnant and carried a fake birth certificate indicating she was 10, Texas Children's Protective Services (CPS) officials said Thursday.
Officials said Adela's mother told them she had the certificate forged so she could enroll her daughter in a Houston school after the family moved to the United States about 10 years ago.
The girl was taken into custody two weeks ago after welfare officials called CPS, saying that a 10-year-old pregnant girl had applied for benefits. Adela fled last Sunday, apparently afraid the state would take her baby from her.
Her 22-year-old boyfriend, Pedro Roman Sotelo, was taken to jail Thursday on charges of aggravated sexual assault and bond was set for $200,000. He is expected to be arraigned Friday.
Adela, who officials say is still a minor under Texas law, was taken to a juvenile detention center.
WASHINGTON (CNN) -- The head of the government's General Services Administration resigned Thursday, citing what he calls the "intolerance and divisive rhetoric" of some congressional Republicans.
Roger Johnson, himself a Republican, took over GSA almost three years ago. The agency manages federal buildings and facilities.
Johnson called federal employees "dedicated and hard-working," and said they don't deserve to be "scapegoats" for the nation's problems.
LUMBERTON, North Carolina (CNN) -- A witness testified Thursday that Daniel Green was the man who shot and killed basketball star Michael Jordan's father.
Larry Demery testified outside the jury's presence in the North Carolina murder trial. Demery has already pleaded guilty to first-degree murder in exchange for his testimony
He said Green used a stolen pistol to kill James Jordan during a robbery in 1993, and that Jordan surprised them as they tried to steal his luxury car.
If convicted, Green could get the death penalty.
LOS ANGELES (CNN) -- Los Angeles Police Department sources told CNN Thursday that members of its robbery-homicide division have been detailing evidence that was never introduced in the O.J. Simpson criminal trial which they hope can be used against the former football star in the ongoing wrongful death civil suit.
The evidence includes witnesses who say Simpson had been stalking his ex-wife, Nicole, sources said. Simpson has denied that allegation in the past.
Simpson was charged with the 1994 murders of his former wife Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend Ronald Goldman. Simpson was acquitted last October, but is now in the midst of giving depositions in the civil suit.
Lawyers for the Goldman family questioned Simpson for the fourth day Wednesday. The questioning was "dramatically different" Thursday, a day after he appeared on his first TV interview since his acquittal, Ronald Goldman's father said.
Fred Goldman said he didn't watch Simpson's interview Wednesday on the Black Entertainment Network, during which Simpson expressed anger at the victims' families.
An estimated 3 million homes tuned in to Simpson's interview on the Black Entertainment Network (BET) Wednesday night, the cable network said Thursday.
