Michael Jackson released from New York hospital

Michael Jackson

NEW YORK (CNN) -- To the screaming delight of fans, Michael Jackson on Tuesday walked out of a New York hospital where he had been treated for six days for a gastrointestinal illness that caused him to collapse on stage.

The 37-year-old entertainer was driven from Beth Israel North Hospital just after 1:45 p.m. EST in a white van to an undisclosed location.

His doctors said Monday he will require medical care and bed rest to make a complete recovery from a life-threatening viral illness that left him severely dehydrated, quickened his heart beat and lowered his blood pressure.

The infection forced Jackson to cancel a cable special that was to have aired Sunday on HBO. (587K QuickTime Movie)

"He's doing very well and is recuperating," said the spokeswoman for the Center to Prevent Handgun Violence, a gun control group headed by Brady's wife, Sarah.

Brady, President Ronald Reagan's press secretary, was released from the Fairfax Hospital in nearby Virginia Saturday. He was admitted November 28 in critical condition after his heart stopped briefly when he received an anesthetic for oral surgery at a dentist's office.

Brady, 55, was left paralyzed and confined to a wheelchair after he was shot in the head by a gunman who also shot and wounded Reagan and two security officers on March 30, 1981.

FDA orders Las Vegas casinos to cut laser shows

LAS VEGAS, Nevada (CNN) -- Federal regulators have pulled the plug on casinos' laser light shows. The federal Food and Drug Administration banned the shows because of concern that pilots flying over Las Vegas might be temporarily blinded.

The FDA has fielded increased complaints from pilots who say they have become momentarily blinded when the laser lights flashed in their cockpits.

The federal agency usually regulates lasers as medical devices.
