Report: Tobacco firm targeted teens

WASHINGTON (AP) -- An official of the R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. proposed marketing cigarettes to underage smokers as far back as the 1970s, The Washington Post reported Wednesday.

"Realistically, if our company is to survive and prosper, over the long term, we must get our share of the youth market. In my opinion, this will require new brands tailored to the youth market," Claude E. Teague Jr., then the company's assistant director of research and development, wrote in a Feb. 2, 1973, memo obtained by the Post.

Teague's memo cautioned officials against influencing non-smokers to adopt the habit, but stated that "we should simply recognize that many or most of the `21 and under' group will inevitably become smokers, and offer them an opportunity to use our brands."

RJR spokesman David B. Fishel downplayed the memo's significance, calling it a "draft document that reflects preliminary thought of one individual in research and development. We have seen nothing that indicates that it was ever reviewed or acted upon in any way," Fishel said. He said the document was not secret and had been produced repeatedly in court cases.

Mother convicted in hot car deaths of young sons

Ducker

McMINNVILLE, Tennessee (CNN) -- A mother whose two young sons died after being left in an overheated car was acquitted of murder Tuesday. But Jennie Bain Ducker was convicted of aggravated child abuse and faces a 15 to 25 year sentence. Her estranged husband, James, the father of the two dead boys, called the verdict too light. Her attorney plans to appeal.

Ducker will be sentenced November 9 in the deaths of her sons Devin, 1, and Dustin, 2. They were left strapped in their car seats for at least eight hours last June while their mother was drinking and sleeping in her boyfriend's motel room. Temperatures in the car went above 100 degrees Fahrenheit.
