The Rock, a hard place to do hard time, faces wrecking ballNovember 9, 1999
RAIFORD, Florida (CNN) -- While "the Rock" is putting up a valiant fight, the walls of the tough old Florida prison are tumbling down. Sometimes the wrecking ball bounces off the thick, steel-reinforced concrete of the prison, built in 1928. But when the demolition crews hit their mark, the crumbling pieces expose the secret lives of those who did time there. Up to 18 men slept in cells designed for six. Even guards were not safe. Ten guards were stabbed during a two-week melee in 1983. Citing its harsh conditions, a federal judge closed the Rock in 1985. A search of the prison before its demolition turned up an assortment of artifacts left by the former inmates, including hundreds of makeshift knives.
