Amtrak train jumps track east of Los Angeles

Five injured with 'bumps and bruises'

October 22, 1999
Web posted at: 12:31 p.m. EDT (1631 GMT)

CATHEDRAL CITY, California (CNN) -- An Amtrak train carrying 234 people derailed early Friday morning in the desert east of Los Angeles, slightly injuring five people.

The "Sunset Limited" -- with three engines and 16 cars -- was traveling from Orlando, Florida, to Los Angeles when it derailed near Palm Springs, about 110 miles east of Los Angeles.

An Amtrak spokesman said seven cars ran off the tracks, but all remained upright.

Three crew members and two passengers were hurt. Amtrak spokesman John Wolf described the injuries as "bumps and bruises." Riverside County fire officials said one of the injured was taken to a nearby hospital.

Buses were brought to the scene to take the stranded passengers to their destinations.

The cause of the accident is under investigation.

On Saturday, another Amtrak train derailed after a magnitude 7.1 earthquake in the California desert. Amtrak said the two incidents are not related. The two sites are about 50 miles apart.
