Sen. Kennedy's wife, 'Waltons' actress part of gun-safety group
October 6, 1999 WASHINGTON (CNN) -- The wife of one of America's most famous politicians and one of the country's most famous TV mothers are part of a new organization promoting gun safety in homes with children. Common Sense About Kids and Guns includes both child-safety and gun-rights advocates. The organization is being led by Victoria Reggie, the wife of Sen. Ted Kennedy (D-Massachusetts). Among the group's other supporters is the actress Michael Learned, who played Olivia Walton on the popular 1970s television series "The Waltons." The group's stated mission is the "reduction of gun deaths and injuries to children and teens by promoting common-sense safety measures and personal and community responsibility for preventing unsupervised access to guns." The new organization plans to release print, radio and TV ads containing safety tips for gun owners. It also has a Web site (www.kidsandguns.org). The group includes supporters from both sides of the gun debate, including the chairman of Stop Handgun Violence and the executive director of a gun manufacturers' trade group.
