State Dept. absorbs USIAOctober 1, 1999 WASHINGTON (CNN) -- The way the United States presents its values to the rest of the world is going to change -- or will it?
For 50 years, the U.S. Information Agency was the voice of American perspectives and culture, paid for by the federal government but with a measure of autonomy. But on Friday, the USIA was merged into the State Department, which has been fighting to regain control of overseas government programs lost during the past several decades. While the Clinton administration says the change will bring the tradition-bound State Department into the Information Age, critics see problems arising from the new union.
