Railway killings suspect sends new letter to media
August 25, 1999 HOUSTON (CNN) -- Angel Maturino-Resendiz, who is charged with four killings in Texas, two in Illinois and one in Kentucky, has responded to a request from a reporter at KPRC-TV in Houston with a 12-page, handwritten letter in which he complains about jail food, talks about the presidential race, and questions his sanity. The undated letter was sent from the Harris County Jail, where Angel Maturino-Resendiz has been since he surrendered July 13. Besides the charges he already faces in seven killings, he remains a suspect in two other Texas killings. Victims of an alleged "railway killer" lived near railway tracks and were beaten to death, strangled, stabbed or axed to death by an intruder. Maturino-Resendiz' letter was written in English. His native language is Spanish. It is the third letter he has sent to the media since his arrest. In response to a question about his political and religious beliefs, he wrote: "I support (Republican presidential candidate Steve) Forbes or (Republican candidate Gary) Beaur (Bauer), because the(y) are my brothers in Faith, this man do not want babies to be murdered..." Asked whether he feels betrayed by the State of Texas, he wrote, "As far as I was told, I was to be try (tried) in one trial in the Federal Court, but (Attorney General) Janet Reno allow the State of Texas to get me, so the USA want me dead. The Texas prosecutor stated that if one doctor does not agree that I am sane, she will keep going untill (sic) one agrees with her. She want to kill me." He wrote that he was interrogated for "about 10 hours" by the Texas Rangers "against my wishes." "After I did not tell the officer what he wante(d) to hear, he kick(ed) me and told me that I was to go craisdy (crazy) if I did not get it off my chest." He was also promised unrestricted visits, he wrote, but is able to see his family only through a glass window, not what he had expected. "To a Mexican it means to be able to hug his mother and kiss his child and wife, they even rent rooms for the family to visit a few times per year. But this is not the way the USA, (Texas Governor George W.) Bush sees compassion. Bush compassion will kill me soon." He was also told he could get kosher foods, he wrote. "To this day, I have not have it (at) all." Maturino-Resendiz wrote that his sister Manuela was told "she could loose [sic] her house and kids if she did not help them to get me. My sister Manitza was told that her husband could get in trouble, but if she help, she was promise US residence and monetary help." The rest of his family, he said, was threatened "with the possible use of bounty hunters..." On the 12th and final page, he wrote "I think I may go insane. I do not fear this, since reality has not been good to me. At some time I have start(ed) to hear funny voices, like a person calling me, but no one call me." "I may not really want to live anymore," he wrote, "and this is terrible for my mother. She could die if I die. But the worst is that I am tem(p)ted by death more all the time, and I may do it any time soon." "I have lost the fear of killing my self or the rules that did not allow me to do it, now is only a matter of time, but I know it will be done. I have no choice in this. I am in a no return trip, on a train that leads to death only and I am not able to get off this train." RELATED STORIES: Railway killer suspect pleads not guilty to murder RELATED SITES: FBI
