WASHINGTON (CNN) -- CNN has learned the FBI is adding alleged organized crime figure James "Whitey" Bulger to its Ten Most Wanted list. The announcement represents a dramatic turnaround by the FBI because Bulger, a well-known figure in Boston, was a one-time informant.
The FBI has sought Bulger, also known as "Jimmy Blue Eyes," since a January 1995 warrant was issued for his arrest on extortion and racketeering charges.
The 69-year-old Bulger is accused by federal authorities of funding his activities through gambling, loan sharking and drugs. He is also believed to be armed and dangerous.
Bulger replaces Angel Materino Resendiz, who surrendered to authorities earlier this summer in connection with the so-called "Railway Killer" murders that took place near railroad tracks throughout the United States.
