NEW YORK (CNN) -- At least one person was killed and two others wounded Monday after an apparent shooting in the lobby of a Wall Street bank, police told CNN.

New York City officers marked at least eight shell cases amid the shattered glass at the New York headquarters of the Hong- Kong-Shanghai bank, known formerly as Marine Midland.

Employees in the building reported hearing two rounds of gunfire, about 12 shots in total.

The New York Police Department first received a call at 12:53 p.m. ET, spokesman Joe Moreno told CNN. Several ambulances were dispatched to the location.

One man with gunshot wounds below the waist died shortly after being taken to New York University Downtown Hospital, according to spokeswoman Ellen Karasik.

A woman is reported in serious condition at Bellevue Hospital. A third person, whose condition is unknown, was taken to St. Vincent's Hospital.
