MARINE CITY, Michigan (CNN) -- A plane used for skydiving crashed in Michigan Saturday morning, killing a number of people. Police could not confirm the exact number of fatalities.
Officials said the plane crashed near the Marine City airport, a small airport north of Detroit.
"The plane was in a skydiving activity. That's all we really know right now about it," Sgt. Craig Nyehdt of the Michigan State Police told CNN.
Nyehdt said he did not know if the plane was taking off or landing at the airport at the time of the crash.
Officials from the National Transportation Safety Board are en route to the scene from Washington, D.C.
