NEW YORK (CNN) -- A plane possibly carrying John F. Kennedy Jr. was reported missing Saturday morning by Massachusetts airport officials, and a Coast Guard search is underway off Long Island.
Dan Johnson, an operations specialist at Martha's Vineyard Airport, said the plane did not arrive as expected at the Massachusetts resort community Friday night. Johnson said Kennedy and others are believed to have been on board the aircraft.
The U.S. Coast Guard said it has picked up signals from a locator beacon in the waters off the eastern tip of Long Island and is conducting a search. The signals were first received about 4 a.m. Saturday.
Kennedy is the son of the assassinated president and founder of the politics and culture magazine George.
