NRC says 35 reactors not Y2K ready
July 7, 1999
From CNNfn Correspondent Alan Dodds Frank WASHINGTON (CNN) -- The Nuclear Regulatory Commission reported Wednesday that 35 of the nation's commercial nuclear reactors are non-Y2K complaint. The release, a survey from the 103 operating nuclear power reactors, says the 35 have to complete work on "a few non-safety computer systems or devices to be fully Y2K ready." The statement goes on to say "of the 35 plants about one third have remaining work involving systems needed for power generation. Other plants have work that deals with plant monitoring and administrative systems. None of the remaining work affects the ability of a plant to shut down safely if needed. "Typically the remaining Y2K work to be completed after July 1 is because of a scheduled outage in the fall or the necessity to wait for delivery of a replacement component for a plant." According to the NRC, if Y2K readiness activities are not completed by the end of September, it will take appropriate action, including the issuance of shut-down orders. The following plants have work to complete to be fully Y2K compliant:
