OAKLAND, California (CNN) -- Summer school isn't just a second chance in Oakland, California. For failing students, it's the law.

California no longer allows "social promotion," the practice of allowing students with poor grades to advance to the next grade. They now have six weeks to make up the work -- or be left behind.
