June 16, 1999 SACRAMENTO, California (CNN) -- Erik Menendez, who is serving a life sentence along with his brother Lyle for the 1989 slayings of their parents, was married in prison over the weekend, officials said Tuesday. The ceremony took place at California State Prison on Saturday just before 9 a.m. (noon EDT) in the prison visiting room and was performed by a Deputy Commissioner of Marriage from the Sacramento County Recorders Office, according to Billy Mayfield, prison spokesman. Menendez, 28, married Tammi Ruth Saccoman, 37, of Folsom, California. Menendez is not allowed conjugal visits. The Menendez brothers were tried together by two separate juries in 1994 that were unable to agree on a verdict. They were convicted by a single jury in a 1996 retrial and were sentenced to life in prison without possibility of parole for the August 1989 shotgun murders of their parents, Jose and Kitty Menendez. The brothers claimed that they had killed their parents after suffering years of abuse. But prosecutors argued the brothers killed to get the family's fortune, about $14 million. In January 1997, Lyle married his longtime pen pal Anna Erikkson in prison. RELATED STORIES: Menendez brothers fail to get new trial
