Two suspects charged with possession of stolen military explosives

FORT PIERCE, Florida (CNN) -- Two men whose pickup truck was found to contain bomb-making materials faced criminal charges on Saturday after they were charged in a sealed criminal complaint with possession of stolen military explosives.

Five pounds of military-made C-4 plastic explosives, detonator cord and blasting caps were discovered in a truck the men were driving, authorities said Friday.

The ATF identified one of the two men as Allan Jeffries of Destin, Florida. The truck was registered in his name.

Authorities would not identify the other man named in the sealed complaint.

The suspects made their initial court appearance Friday, one day after they were detained and their truck seized at a gas station down the street from a motel where they were staying in Lantana, Florida.

Authorities said that Lake Worth, Florida, police began watching the men after receiving a tip. They were arrested at a gas station after leaving a motel.

Authorities said the material had not been rigged into an explosive device.

ATF spokesman Dale Armstrong told CNN the material was apparently stolen from a U.S. military base and is currently being traced. At first, authorities suggested the men may be linked to a hate group. But on Friday, the ATF backed off that claim. Now, agents say they suspect the men may not have been planning a bombing, but instead appeared intent on selling or trading the explosives.

An unspecified quantity of cocaine and LSD was also found in the truck.

Agent Armstrong says the five pounds of C-4 would be enough to blow up a truck and do serious damage to a nearby building.

A bond hearing has not yet been held. Conviction on the federal charges carry a penalty of up to 10 years in prison.
