(CNN) -- Teens who surf the Internet say their parents know little about the Web sites they visit, and less than a third always follow parental rules for Internet usage, according to a CNN/Time poll released Saturday.

The good news? Only a small minority of teens who use the Internet have ever seen Web sites that have information from hate groups, show how to build a bomb or buy a gun. But a larger minority say have seen sites that have sexual or X-rated content.

Of the teens who have access to the Internet, 43 percent say their parents have no rules governing how much time they can spend online or what sites they are allowed to visit. Another 26 percent say their parents have set rules for Internet usage, but they sometimes don't follow them. Only 31 percent said they follow parental rules all the time.

The poll also suggests that the Internet does not have much influence over teens.

Only 13 percent of all teens say that they have a great deal of trust in the information they get from the Internet. By comparison, 83 percent say they have a great deal of trust in the information they get from their parents.

The story is different for computer video games. Unlike Internet usage, most teens who play computer games report that their parents know a lot about the games they play. But a majority of teens who play computer games say their parents do not have rules about how much time they spend playing games or what games they are allowed to play.

Most teens have played them at some point, although only 8 percent regularly play violent games like Doom or Duke Nukem.

The poll was conducted April 27-29 and included interviews with 409 teen-agers between the ages of 13 and 17. It has a sampling error of plus or minus 5 percent.
