NEW YORK (CNN) -- The Big Apple hosted a rather unconventional convention over the weekend: Erotica '99.

Billed as an exposition of romance, adventure, and sensuality designed to improve the love lives of visitors, the show made headlines long before it opened, when critics protested the sex expo at the state-run Javits Center.
