Feds to investigate fuel tank leaksMarch 19, 1999 DETROIT (CNN) -- The Federal Government plans to launch a "preliminary investigation" into possible fuel tank leaks that could result from side-impact crashes in several models of DaimlerChrysler minivans and Chevrolet pickup trucks. A spokesman from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration told CNN that government research found something "unusual" in routine crash tests, but would not elaborate. However, DaimlerChrysler spokesman Mike Aberlich said the defect involved a 6- to 8-inch rubber hose that came loose. The hose connects the filler pipe to the fuel tank. The models involved in the preliminary investigation are:
