Feds to investigate fuel tank leaks

March 19, 1999
Web posted at: 7:48 p.m. EST (0048 GMT)

DETROIT (CNN) -- The Federal Government plans to launch a "preliminary investigation" into possible fuel tank leaks that could result from side-impact crashes in several models of DaimlerChrysler minivans and Chevrolet pickup trucks.

A spokesman from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration told CNN that government research found something "unusual" in routine crash tests, but would not elaborate.

However, DaimlerChrysler spokesman Mike Aberlich said the defect involved a 6- to 8-inch rubber hose that came loose. The hose connects the filler pipe to the fuel tank.

The models involved in the preliminary investigation are:

  • 1999 Chevrolet S-10 pickup trucks
  • 1996-99 Dodge Caravan minivans
  • 1996-99 Dodge Grand-Caravan minivans
  • 1996-99 Plymouth Voyager minivans
  • 1996-99 Plymouth Town and Country minivans

NHTSA spokesman Tim Hurd told CNN a recall is not imminent and said that more tests must be performed before that determination can be made.
