Congressman arrested at New York police brutality protest

Ex-mayor also among 13 detained

March 15, 1999

NEW YORK (CNN) -- Rep. Charles Rangel (D-New York) and former New York City Mayor David Dinkins were among at least 13 people arrested on Monday at a rally against police brutality.

About 50 people took part in the rally held at Police Headquarters in lower Manhattan. The arrests came when demonstrators sat in front of the door and would not move.

Those arrested, including the Rev. Al Sharpton, were charged with trespassing.

Monday's rally was one of a series of such protests held since the fatal February 4 shooting of Amadou Diallo in the Bronx.

Diallo, an immigrant from Africa, was shot 19 times by four police officers who fired a total of 41 bullets at him.

Local and federal law enforcement are investigating the shooting.
