Smoke forces United jet to make emergency landing
March 12, 1999 STEPHENVILLE, Newfoundland (CNN) -- A United Airlines flight from Washington to Milan, Italy, made an emergency landing in Newfoundland early Friday after smoke was detected in the plane. United Flight 971, a Boeing 767, had 214 passengers and 13 crew members on board. No injuries were reported. At the time the smoke was detected, the plane was 75 miles west of Stephenville, which is on Newfoundland's west coast. It landed at about 1:50 a.m. (12:20 a.m. EST.) The United plane was flown back to the United States. Passengers continued to Italy on another airline.
