Rodney King booked on domestic abuse charges
March 5, 1999 RANCHO CUCAMONGA, California (CNN) -- Rodney King, whose videotaped beating by Los Angeles police drew international outrage in 1991, was booked and released Friday on misdemeanor charges of domestic abuse and vandalism. He is free after posting $6,850 bail. Arraignment is set for Monday in Fontana, California at Valley Munincipal Court, authorities said. Deputy Maggie Finneran of the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department said King, 33, turned himself in without incident to the West Valley Detention Center in Rancho Cucamonga Friday afternoon. No information was provided on when the alleged incidents occurred. All the charges against King are misdemeanors, officials said. The warrant was filed through the San Bernardino District Attorney's office, said spokeswoman Melanie Kellner of the San Bernardino Sheriff's office. On March 3, 1991, King, who is black, gained international attention after he was beaten by white Los Angeles Police Department officers who had stopped him after an apparent traffic violation. The beating was captured on videotape, and was later played on news stations throughout the world. Four officers charged in connection with the case were acquitted in 1992, a decision that spawned three days of rioting in Los Angeles and sparked outrage among civil rights leaders. Two of the four officers were later convicted in federal court of violating King's civil rights. In April 1994, a jury awarded King $3.8 million in damages. Since then, King has had various run-ins with the law. He served a 90-day sentence for misdemeanor domestic violence in 1997. He has also been arrested for soliciting a transvestite prostitute and for drunken driving. RELATED STORIES: Rodney King turns himself in to face domestic abuse charge
