February 22, 1999 ARAPAHOE BASIN, Colorado (CNN) -- Riders piloting elaborate sleds made of cardboard (and little else) slipped and slided down a Colorado ski slope in the 11th annual Cardboard Box Derby. Many of the contraptions disintegrated along the way.
As onlookers cheered, more than 200 teams competed in the event, held over the weekend at the Arapahoe Basin ski resort, about 70 miles west of Denver.
Every team had a theme. The entries were made up to look like a Volkswagen minibus, a six-pack of beer, the Pillsbury Doughboy, a tank and an outhouse, to name just a few of the designs. The sleds could be made only of cardboard, string, glue and tape. But there was no rule that they had to stay in one piece as they zoomed -- not always in a straight line -- downhill.
