Maine snowman would be world's tallest
U.S. town hopes to break Guinness record set in JapanFebruary 16, 1999Web posted at: 2:46 p.m. EST (1946 GMT) BETHEL, Maine (CNN) -- The sign outside the construction site says it all: "Future Site, World's Largest Snowman." If that doesn't convince you, maybe the hard hats and heavy equipment will. The people of Bethel, a town in southwestern Maine, are serious as they go about trying to set a new world's record. Tons of snow, scooped up by a crane-hoisted bucket, are being piled higher and higher to build a snow creation dubbed "Angus, King of the Mountain." Volunteers with hand shovels are part of the town project, too. At first, the weather wasn't cooperating. "The whole month of December was warm, rainy and you couldn't make any snow," said project engineer Jim Sysko.
Of course, the tall snowman needs some extra-large accessories. School children have made a giant quilt-like hat and huge carrot nose. A giant scarf is ready to be wrapped around the snowman's thick neck. And tires will be the buttons on the snowman's coat. So far, Angus is about 80 feet tall, but the goal is to reach 110 feet by the weekend. If successful, the residents of Bethel will surpass the current Guinness record of 96 feet, 7 inches held by the residents of Yamagata, Japan. That snowman, presumably long gone now, was built over a period of 10 days and nights in March 1995. CNN affiliate WCSH and The Associated Press contributed to this report.
