Fewer than 15 percent of California drivers use carpool lanes, but state officials want to double the lanes' mileage by 2015

LOS ANGELES (CNN) -- New Jersey may be giving up on its high-occupancy-vehicle lanes, but California wants to double the miles allotted for carpools.
The familiar diamond symbol marking express lanes for commuters has been a fixture on many highways for years. But New Jersey has decided the lanes aren't working, and state highway officials are getting rid of them. New Jersey Gov. Christine Whitman says the lanes actually add to traffic problems.
Although fewer than 15 percent of California drivers use the lanes, transportation planners there say the lanes will become more useful as more motorists cruise the state's highways.
