SANTA CLARA, California (CNN) -- What do you give a little boy for his birthday, three months after he's lost a leg under the wheels of a train?

In the case of 4-year-old Joseph Bialowas -- a victim of his mother's suicide -- the people of Santa Clara, California, offered gifts, of course. But, more important, they gave a love born of tragedy.
