Learn about rights at ACLU conference

October 28, 1998
Web posted at: 1:29 p.m. EST (1829 GMT)

BERKELEY, California (CNN) -- Student rights and responsibilities were explained to northern California high schoolers at a one-day conference sponsored by the American Civil Liberties Union on Tuesday.

Some of the more than 1,000 students at the conference were young journalists learning about their free speech rights as they try to publish controversial articles. Other issues being discussed include student searches and discrimination.

While critics might call the gathering "Rabble Rousing 101," organizers say it's more like a lesson in good student citizenship. Judge for yourself in this report from CNN's Greg Lefevre.
