Fire fright leads to recall of ghoulish Halloween ware

Web posted at: 11:42 p.m. EST (0442 GMT)

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- A New York costume company is recalling children's vampire capes and witch's brooms that fail to meet federal flammability standards and could catch on fire.

Rubie's Costume Co. issued the recall at the request of the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. About 12,000 of the products are being taken from the market.

"This is the result of our annual spot check of Halloween products, after which we asked them to recall the products," said Russ Rade, spokesman for the safety commission.

The black vinyl vampire capes bear Rubie's logo and are packaged in a plastic sleeve reading "Child's Vinyl Vampire Cape, No. 50282, Made in China."

The witch's brooms, 27 inches long with a bamboo handle and brush made of twigs, are sold with a sticker on the handle reading "Child's Authentic Witch Broom, Style No. 85" and also bear Rubie's logo.

The capes and brooms were sold between September 1997 and October 1998. Customers are being asked to return them to the stores where they were purchased. Customers with questions can call (516) 488-0484 between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. EST Monday through Friday.
