October 27, 1998
Web posted at: 5:12 p.m. EST (2212 GMT)

LOS ANGELES (CNN) -- A series of small earthquakes shook a mountain community about 100 miles (160 km) northeast of Los Angeles on Monday night and Tuesday morning, but no immediate reports of damage or casualties were received.

Seismologists at the California Institute of Technology said the first quake, measuring 4.9 on the Richter scale, struck about 4 miles (6.4 km) north of Big Bear City in a wooded area of the San Bernardino Mountains.

It was followed by three smaller aftershocks, registering 3.2, 3.7 and 4.2. The last tremor hit at 7:40 a.m. (10:40 a.m. EST) on Tuesday, said CalTech spokesperson Sue McHugh.

Officials at the Big Bear Police Department said that the main shock was widely felt by residents.

Reuters contributed to this report.
