Topless Beetle takes off

Beetle
It can cost up to $12,000 to convert a Volkswagen Beetle into a convertible
October 26, 1998
Web posted at: 2:42 p.m. EST (1942 GMT)

NEWPORT BEACH, California (CNN) -- Vickie Boyd spent thousands of dollars to go topless. And she's not alone. Boyd is among hundreds of car owners who bought a new Volkswagen Beetle only to spend thousands of dollars more to have the roof ripped off.

Why not just buy a convertible Bug in the first place? Volkswagen doesn't make one, at least not yet.

In the meantime, as CNN's Greg LaMotte reports, car customizers are cashing in on the topless trend.
