NEW YORK (CNN) -- New York Yankees outfielder Darryl
Strawberry was released from Columbia-Presbyterian
Medical Center on Friday following cancer surgery.
Strawberry's condition was diagnosed shortly before
this year's baseball playoffs. He underwent surgery to have a cancerous 2.4-inch tumor
removed from his colon on October 3. He will convalesce at
his home in Fort Lee, New Jersey.
The World Series begins Saturday night at Yankee Stadium
between the Yankees and National League champion San Diego
Padres.
Strawberry, 36, began his major league career with the New York
Mets in 1983. He signed with the Yankees in 1995 after
battling a cocaine addiction that had led to his suspension
from baseball that year after failing a drug test while a
member of the San Francisco Giants. He also has played with
the Los Angeles Dodgers.
