Innovative educational project tries to improve on public school system

MOUNT CLEMENS, Michigan (CNN) -- Educators say it's "unusual" for kindergartners to be learning to read. But the King Academy in Mount Clemens, Michigan, is an unusual school.

King is part of the public school system, but it's run by a private company known as the Edison Project.

"We have taken things that work from good and great schools, public and private, and assembled them under one schoolhouse roof," explains Chris Whittle, founder of the project.

A few of the things Whittle and company have done:

  • Provide computers, at no cost, to every family with a student in grades one through five.

  • Extend the school year to 205 days from an average of 189.

  • Lengthen the school day by two to three hours.

  • Provide extra support and training for teachers.

CNN Detroit Bureau Chief Ed Garsten takes a look at King Academy and what the Edison Project has done there.
