Innovative educational project tries to improve on public school systemSeptember 8, 1998Web posted at: 9:54 p.m. EDT (0154 GMT) MOUNT CLEMENS, Michigan (CNN) -- Educators say it's "unusual" for kindergartners to be learning to read. But the King Academy in Mount Clemens, Michigan, is an unusual school. King is part of the public school system, but it's run by a private company known as the Edison Project. "We have taken things that work from good and great schools, public and private, and assembled them under one schoolhouse roof," explains Chris Whittle, founder of the project.
