2 prosecutors to help present Ramsey case to grand jury
September 4, 1998Web posted at: 10:42 p.m. EDT (0242 GMT) BOULDER, Colorado (CNN) -- Two Colorado prosecutors have been chosen to help present the JonBenet Ramsey murder case to a grand jury. Colorado Gov. Buddy Romer last month refused to name a special prosecutor to take over the case from Boulder District Attorney Alex Hunter, but he did recommend that Hunter accept outside help. The chief trial deputies from the district attorneys' offices in Denver and Adams County were selected to join the case, Hunter announced Friday. Brian Levin and Mitch Morrissey will assist Boulder grand jury specialist Mike Kane with the presentation of the Ramsey case to a grand jury, Hunter said. Levin has been with the Adams County prosecutor's office for 18 years and has tried 25 homicide cases, including four first-degree murder cases in the last year, Hunter said. Morrissey has been a Denver prosecutor for 14 years and is widely recognized as a DNA expert, Hunter said. The Ramsey case has been hampered by tainting of crime scene evidence the day JonBenet's body was found, infighting between the police and district attorney's office and the initial reluctance of the Ramseys to be formally questioned by police detectives. No arrests have been made in the case, nearly two years after the former Little Miss Colorado's body was found in the basement of her family's Boulder, Colorado, home. She had been beaten and strangled. Hunter and Police Chief Mark Beckner have said the Ramseys are "under the umbrella of suspicion." The case is expected to be turned over to a grand jury this month. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||
