Suspect in campers' deaths caught in North CarolinaAugust 5, 1998Web posted at: 10:41 p.m. EDT (2241 GMT)
MOUNT GILEAD, North Carolina (CNN) -- A suspect in last weekend's shooting and slashing deaths of two North Carolina campers was arrested Wednesday night near a hunting lodge. Montgomery County Sheriff Jeff Jordan said authorities captured 21-year-old James Andrew Finley of Hickory, North Carolina, about 10 miles from where a stolen car was found. Finley is believed responsible for the deaths of Derek Andrew Marston and Tommi Danielle Byrd, both 24, at their campsite in the Linville Gorge Wilderness Area of the Pisgah National Forest north of Charlotte Saturday night. Finley was reportedly fascinated by the ability of suspected women's clinic bomber Eric Robert Rudolph to elude authorities, and had bragged about how he could outsmart law enforcement searchers. Rudolph, wanted in the January 29 bombing of a clinic in Birmingham, Alabama, where abortions are performed, remains at large. Finley had been scheduled to appear in court July 28 on a charge of driving with an expired inspection sticker. He did not appear, and two days later a relative reported he had stolen guns, a knife and a car. That car was found near the campsite, and Finley allegedly fled in a car belonging to one of the victims. The victim's car was found abandoned early Tuesday. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||
