ATLANTA (CNN) -- A New Jersey toddler was one of the first children to die in 1997. When her mother's boyfriend was charged with beating Amara Wilkerson to death, it was noted briefly on Page 25 of the local newspaper.
In 1997 alone, more than 2,000 children like Amara died at the hands of abuse. And while 1997 is only one year, it tells a tragic story of how society is neglecting the issue of child abuse. Correspondent Linda Patillo has the story.
